ICAO 291 AVIATION ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Prerequisites

    • Students to hold a General Secondary Certificate or equivalent foreign

      certificate with a pass result of not less than 70%.

      Students to demonstrate fluency in English at IELTS Band 4.5 to 5.5, the equivalent thereof or successful completion of a CEFR B1 Pre- Intermediate course with an OOPT placement test score of 40+.

Synopsis

  • The Aviation English Language course is designed for students working in the Aviation industry who require English language development in order to meet ICAO English Language Proficiency Requirements, including standard phraseology, routine language, listening and speaking skills necessary to achieve minimum ICAO level 4.

Objective

  • At the end of the course participants will be able to:

    Read a variety of texts appropriate to the aviation industry on aviation related themes Initiate and maintain exchanges with reasonable ease on familiar topics in predictable situations.

  • Give brief, informal and formal presentations using PowerPoint and give impromptu presentations.

  • Control basic grammatical structures and sentence patterns associated with predictable situations
  • Recognise and use general vocabulary, memorised phrases and vocabulary related to aviation themes such as aviation jobs, aerodromes, emergencies, safety, events in- flight, meteorology and the flight deck.
  • Recognise and comprehend authentic radio exchanges in aviation operations  understand  the  importance  of  accuracy  and  good communication skills in the aviation industry

  • Produce and recognise stretches of language with accurate comprehension  on  common  and  work  related  topics.

  • Be able to use an English-English-Arabic dictionary and understand the phonemic script
  • Be able to use the Phonetic alphabet and understand basic phraseology

Assessment

  • The course includes written examinations to assess learning and practical assessments to assess competence in each unit. Each examination/ assessment is conducted in a controlled environment. Participants are of current adult learning principles and training techniques in order to perform the role on Training Officer in an operational environment.
